Malla Gissona, San Sebastian
From the world-renowned food and drink destination of San Sebastian in the Basque country, the Mala Gissona brewery produces a unique selection of artisan beers with depth of flavour and that can stand alongside the finest food.
The Beer: Malla Gissona Django 5% – a wheat beer brewed with Hallertauer Tradition hops named in honour of the great Jazz musician Django Reinhart, who influenced American Jazz during the 30s and 40s. A pale beer with a white head and intense and fruity bouquet, it’s very refreshing, lasting and light bodied.
Food Match: Fantastic with Gambas Prawns, all seafood, sushi and fresh cheeses. La Tasca Croquetas match – Spider Crab
Cerveses La Pirata, Barcelona
After three years living a nomadic life brewing in other factories, La Pirata opened their first brewery in October 2015 in Súria, a small village 70km from Barcelona. Since its inception the brewery has won the National Award for the Best Brewery in Fira del Poblenou (Barcelona) twice, while also picking up a number of other awards including two bronzes at the Global Craft Beer Awards. Keen collaborators too, the Catalan brewery has also created crafty beers with the UK’s Brew By Numbers, Kaapse Brouwers of the Netherlands and USA’s Against The Grain. Cerveses La Pirata’s philosophy is simple – they brew incendiary, craft and natural beers which make people smile.
The Beer: Viakrucis (6% ABV) – a full flavoured American IPA made using Citra, Summit and CTZ hops. The perfect ‘All Day IPA’ with a great body, balance, and markedly dry and bitter finish.
Food Match: Great with salty Marcona almonds, juicy Gordal olives or spicy food. La Tasca Croquetas match – Chorizo
The Beer: Sansa (6% ABV) – an amber ale made with Chinook and Simcoe hops. Reddish in colour with a full body, this beer has malty touches interspersed with the hops to give a touch a bitterness.

The brewery was set up by Martina Molloy & Peter Bonner in 2012. After deciding to take the plunge in 2009 they swapped the mean streets of Lambeth for the vineyards of the Penedès with their 2 boys then aged 8 & 5. Their first brewery was based on a vineyard in the Penedès region. They quickly outgrew this and moved the brewery into Vilafranca del Penedès, the capital of the Penedès wine region where the brewery is currently housed in a former bodega neighbouring those of Pinord and Torres wines. With more space, the brewery was expanded and a gastro-bar /taproom added where the beer can be enjoyed with gourmet hamburgers as well as local charcuterie, cheeses and olives.
The Beer: Siete Vidas (4.8%) – As Spanish cats have only 7 lives as opposed to the 9 of their English cousins, the brewery donates 7% of the proceeds of sales to the local animal shelter to help with the shortfall! A light refreshing Kolsch-style beer with lager malt and German hops.
